Who influences your student-athlete?

I, like most parents, like to think that I am the most influential person in my children’s life. While I agree with that thought for the most part, I see other influences as well.

It is not uncommon to spend time working with a 7-to-8-year old on her pitching technique only to have it go out the window when she sees an older child do some unbelievably crazy style of pitch.

Everything we went over seems to have been forgotten, and now something else has been copied to perfection.

I see 10-year olds (and even older) totally in awe of our college and Team USA softball players.

Plus, as much as athletes and celebrities (like Charles Barkley) profess they are not role models our youth disagree.

So who is influencing your student-athlete?

I sum it up to the person who cares—or seems to care—about your child. Like a volunteer coach, a teammate, family members, you the parent, or a combination of these.

My own daughter shared with me a list of the people who influenced her as a student-athlete: her brothers, an uncle, a travel ball coach, and me. Of all the years she played softball (including college) those are the people she named.

So who influences your student-athlete?

As you well know, Daryn marches to her own drummer! Kellen admires Michael Orr and the family who took him in and says me and Dad also in fluence her…of course!

I asked Becky who influences her the most – her answer – Mike Quiroz and Ron Keester. Both outstanding coaches! She also said her mom and dad, but not as much as the coaches. I’m sure as she grows older the people who influence her will change, but for now, I liked her answers and couldn’t agree more.
